| Abstract/Contents: | "As the length of confinement and the ratio of male to female Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) were increased, the frequency of mating also increased. Generally, females do not mate more than once during a given night but may male as many as 7 times during 5 days. Males were capable of mating each night but never more than once each night. The record number of matings for 1 male was 12. Males were sterilized with tepa and allowed to compete with untreated males (ratios ranging from 4:1 to 8:1) for untreated females (male to female ratios ranging from 1:1 to 4:1). Based on reduction in egg hatch, the criterion of competitiveness, the sterile male is not able to compete effectively with untreated males for females." |
