Abstract/Contents:"Fall color retention, early spring greenup and winter survival under low temperatures are important traits of buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides Nutt.) intended for use as a low maintenance turfgrass. Seeds of two buffalograss populations collected from Central Mexico, one North American native buffalograss collected from a natural stand in Texas, and a North American commercial buffalograss cultivar were tested for winter green color retention, cold (0 to 2 degrees C) and freezing (-12 degrees C) resistance. Both the North American and Mexican buffalograsses resumed growth after 14 weeks of cold treatment, but only the North American buffalograsses resumed growth after 2 weeks of freezing. The Mexican buffalograsses remained green through December, losing color only after exposure to frost in January. Genetic variation in cold and freezing resistance among the buffalograss collections could be important in buffalograss improvement."
