Abstract/Contents: | Profiles cumberland turf, explaining that it was used for bowling greens that are now "laid with turf from the Lancashire sea-board." Indicates that the use of "sea-washed turf" may not be favorable as it "loses its character after a period of years." Addresses the cause of deterioration in turf and conceives that deterioration "can be prevented only by promoting the spread of Red Fescue, thereby suppressing the invasion of Annual Meadow Grass." Briefly discusses the various fertilizer compositions to be used on bowling greens and provides a mixture "designed specifically to encourage the spread of Creeping Red Fescue." Gives recommendations on the application timing and concludes that "a correct time-table of fertiliser [fertilizer] treatment...is the key to the successful management of cumberland turf greens." |
