Abstract/Contents:Discusses the factors which cause variations in soil characteristics, putting an emphasis on the effect of leaching on soil. Addresses the fertility of soil, explaining that "the type of vegetation is sometimes helpful in assessing the fertility of a soil." Indicates that "soils composed predominantly of sand are usually termed 'infertile' but the dry invigorating sands near the seaside are ideal for golfing purposes." Explains that when there is a low fertility level in turf, it is described as "hungry" and provides the origin of the term. Addresses how to manage turf described as "hungry" and advises "that first attention be given to ameliorating the physical condition of the soil rather than augmenting the supply of plant food."
