Abstract/Contents:Discusses weed invasion particular to cumberland turf bowling greens, indicating that "this refers to weed species that occur on saltings and sea marshes where the turf is periodically inundated by tides." Presents the possible misconception that "weeds which thrive under maritime influences cannot survive when the turf is removed inland" and opposes it with a study which shows "that certain weeds are able to persist in turf removed from maritime influences and subjected to keen cutting." Provides a brief description of sea pink, sea milwort, and sea plantain which are three common weed species. Explains that these species "are capable of persisting in turf" and explains why it may be difficult to control the weeds. Suggests removing the weeds by hand as mowing may encourage them to thrive. Concludes that "botanical analysis of the turf...[in place] or examination of each turf at the time of construction are the only methods of ensuring a satisfactory playing surface."
