Abstract/Contents:Discusses the difficulty in seed establishment, suggesting favorable timing and soil conditions. Addresses selecting an appropriate sowing time, indicating that "the actual time of sowing should be decided with great care....[and that] grass seeds must be sown early in the growing season to become firmly established before the approach of winter conditions." Recommends ensuring that the seeds are covered properly, explaining that "if seeds are broadcast it is best to sow on a harrowed surface; the seeds can then be covered by employing a peg harrow or a spiked chain harrow." Indicates that "mowing severely at different times of the year" or applying the same fertilizer dressing at the same time every year can effect sward changes. Gives suggestions on fertilizer treatment "designed to encourage the grasses at the expense of weeds" and concludes that "herein lies the key to successful turf management which, properly manipulated, can be made to arrest the spread of the most troublesome weeds."
