Abstract/Contents:Discusses the potential value of early spring green-up in turf while suggesting the difficulty in producing an early green-up in turf which is also of high quality. Indicates that "some of the finest turf grasses are inherently slow to develop...[and] are much more persistent than ordinary commercial strains." Explains that "as commercial grasses are rather earlier to develop...it is always advisable to sow a proportion of these with the indigenous types." Recommends applying a fertilizer after piercing and harrowing the ground, suggesting that "if these operations are omitted fertiliser [fertilizer] dressings never give their maximum response." Proposes piercing to a depth of four inches to promote root growth during the winter, emphasizing its use on sports fields. Concludes that "the value of piercing has been brought to the forefront in late years due no doubt to the great increase in the number of sports grounds and playing fields."
