Abstract/Contents:Addresses a letter published in a previous issue of The Agrostologist by Sir William Hyde Parker discussing a type of drain being used on low land. Mentions an experiment carried out "by a well-known engineer on his estate at Fittleworth, Sussex." Explains that "it was found that in wet weather the pipe lines drained the surplus sub-soil water away with rapidity, and yet allowed sufficient moisture to remain in the soil to keep the crops in perfect condition." Adds that "in dry weather, by slightly raising the river level, the pipes could be used as irrigation lines." Concludes that "this system has now been in existence for many years and...has proved most satisfactory."
