Abstract/Contents:Discusses factors which may result in the discoloration of turf, providing suggestions as to what maintenance practices render turf more susceptible to discoloration. Suggests that "when the turf is mown keenly and constantly the roots never penetrate deeply and the more closely turf is mown the more rapidly will it become discoloured [discolored] in drought," adding that the amount of moisture soil retains may affect the root growth. Indicates that to retain a green turf in dry weather, artificial watering may need to be employed, and provides "certain principles...[that may need to] be followed if the maximum benefit is to be derived from artificial watering." Warns against possible mistakes made when watering turf and suggests that "to obtain the best results from watering, the sprinklers must be brought into use before the turf shows obvious signs of deterioration." Recommends watering in the evening in order to reduce evaporation, adding that if it is necessary to water during the day, "the sprinklers should be operated for a sufficiently long period to ensure deep penetration of water." Indicates that "apart from assisting water penetration, piercing helps to conserve sub-soil moisture by minimising [minimizing] the loss of water due to surface evaporation." Concludes that "turf management spells compromise at almost every point and this is particularly so in relation to artificial watering."
