Abstract/Contents: | Profiles a flat green that is laid with moorland, stating that it "is better described as 'fell' turf, and largely composed of fine leaved fescue, red fescue, and Agrostis." Explains that the "management of this green is designed to maintain the balance of species present," suggesting that fertilizer treatment will resemble the treatment of Cumberland turf. Proposes that aeration be achieved by forking "with a solid tined fork" in the autumn and with a Sarel spiked roller in the summer. Indicates that presence of potash in autumn decreased the severity of the fusarium attack which usually occurs in the winter. States that "raking and brushing are carried out regularly and particularly from the time growth commences in spring up to the beginning of play." Concludes that "turf indigenous to any locality, if properly selected,...[may] be developed into a true playing surface for bowling greens." |
