Abstract/Contents: | Addresses the possibility of all excess land being utilized for crop production in the United Kingdom during World War II. Indicates that golf courses are primarily made of "poor sandy soils" and suggests that "if it is necessary to utilise [utilize] our golf courses and sports grounds, their conversion to war-time needs should be planned with a view to satisfying present demands while increasing their fertility and potential productiveness for succeeding years." Details a maintenance plan for sports turf to prepare soil for the potential crops to be planted if need be. Explains the methods in which the turf would be grazed and continues by providing suggestions on the seed mixture. Suggests that "should hostilities mercifully cease after three or four years, sports grounds and golf courses could be brought back to pre-war condition at quite short notice and at small cost." Concludes that greenkeepers "must develop...[their] grounds in stages-a planned rotation to raise their fertility." |
