Abstract/Contents:Discusses the characteristics of Sea Washed turf, indicating that it varies from other species "not only in the types of...grasses but also in its root content and compactness." Addresses the characteristics of layered turf, describing it as having a "lack of compactness and [a] generally spongy nature." Suggests that this is unsatisfactory for sports turf as "the surface presented for play...[is] far too soft...[yet] for ornamental purposes this turf is quite suitable." Details the deposit of silt on sea march turf from inundation by the tide, explaining that "the deposit of silt in this way encourages dense turf on otherwise thin areas and is entirely beneficial." Suggests that layered turf has some positive qualities in comparison to sea washed turf, and recommends its use for ornamental lawns as it may be found at a reduced price. Provides management recommendations for layered turf "to provide a satisfactory surface for play," and suggests that if layered turf is "required only for ornamental purposes, it is not necessary to practice the schedule of treatment outlined." Concludes that "there is no panacea for turf and with Cumberland Turf-be it layered or otherwise-the groundsman's 'will to succeed' is the surest way to ultimate success."
