Abstract/Contents:Discusses the potential importance for golf course superintendents to maintain firm greens, stating that "the best greens are those that are both firm yet resilient." Details maintenance practices that promote firm turf, explaining that "the first steps toward a firmer golf course could be [first] understanding the golf course and its needs and [second] educating those involved that this is what it will take to achieve the firmness desired." Introduces the USGA (United States Golf Association) Initiative to promote playability over appearance, and mentions the development of technology to measure firmness. Suggests that "the desire to achieve a firm and playable golf course should not be taken to extremes or be used as an excuse for the gross mismanagement of a golf course."
