Abstract/Contents:Focuses on the importance of managing moisture levels in sports turf, suggesting that "in order to understand moisture management, a basic understanding of soils is necessary." Discusses the variation of the infiltration process of excess moisture in different soils, and provides information on technical aspects of infiltration. Mentions that "it is important to understand that these same forces that affect the stability of a root zone are the very same forces that affect the stability of a baseball infield mix." Details the relationship between soil moisture, drainage, and irrigation systems, explaining that "[while] the purpose of an irrigation system is to aid natural rainfall in efficiently maintaining moisture at a level somewhere between field capacity and the turf stress point...The purpose of a drainage system is to effectively and efficiently allow for the removal of free water from the soil profile and return the soil to field capacity."
