Abstract/Contents:Presents part one of a two-part series on baseball infield soils and topdressings. Highlights "goals for a quality infield skin" with regard to traction, drainage, and topdressing. Recommends that field managers test their soil for sand, silt, and clay composition if they do not know "the percent breakdown." Provides a triangular graph as an example, explaining that "each side of the triangle represents the relative content or percent of one of the three soil particle size classes." Includes a section of general guidelines that focus on soil texture and mobility, stating that "mobile soil rapidly develops high and low spots in the skin, and lips at the skin/turf interface. Those low spots and high lips interfere with the surface flow of rainwater draining off the skin, and large puddles develop."
