| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a question regarding an upcoming municipal meeting where the use of organic materials in maintaining public property is to be discussed. Requests assistance in regards to knowing "what information would be helpful to know regarding the feasibility and kind of questions to ask the municipality at the bid meeting." Responds by suggesting to know whether the municipal officials aim for "integrated crop/pest management that minimizes the use of pesticide of a true 'organic' management philosophy that eliminates use of all synthetic pesticides and fertilizer." Indicates that if the true organic management philosophy is used, playing conditions may not be better or identical to their previous state, and stresses the possible difficulty in maintaining a healthy turf if managed organically. Explains that organic herbicides may be inefficient and the annual renovations may be expensive and difficult to achieve, adding that "it is important that the municipality realize that there is no guarantee that an organic management philosophy will be viewed as successful by all users of the field." Concludes that "more research is needed in the area of 'organic' turf management before sound recommendations can be provided that satisfy all citizens, administrators and users of these fields." |
