Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential means of implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices as a response to the 2009 Cosmetic Pesticides Ban in Ontario, Canada, suggesting that "with one fewer pest management tool available to combat weeds and insects, a change in management methods is needed." Emphasizes the possible importance of remaining educated with regard to pest management, noting that "too often, the use of a quick fix like pesticides can take the place of keeping up on understanding new pests and learning about and trying alternative cultural practices." Recommends "[taking] advantage of field days, conferences, and even spending a little time each week on the Internet to really have a thorough understanding of the pests you are likely to encounter." Highlights pest and symptom identification, monitoring, and stress management, stating that "in many cases, pests are present primarily because the desirable turf is under stress and thinned areas have become vulnerable to invasion from weeds or to symptom development from insects or diseases." Provides a table detailing several weeds and potential underlying conditions that might cause their presence. Advises the use of a combination of cultural and chemical control "[to ensure] that no one method is relied upon and...[to give sports turf managers] numerous options for dealing with pests."
