| Abstract/Contents: | "Results are presented of a number of golf playing quality tests which were carried out on a mixed Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaud. and Agrostis castellana Boiss. & Reut. sward grown on a sand rootzone that received a range of fertilizer treatments. Fertilizer treatments were applied throughout the summers of 1986,1987, and 1988 and the turf was subjected to simulated golf-type wear from May 1987. Hardness decreased with increasing nitrogen and with lime. Green 'speed' decreased with increasing nitrogen and with lime, and was affected by the interaction of phosphorus and lime. Rebound resilience increased with increasing nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and with lime. Holding power increased with increasing nitrogen and with lime. The playing quality tests generally proved to be sensitive indicators of differences in sward vigour and highlighted treatment effects which did not show up in the botanical analysis and ground cover tests of the previous paper (Colclough & Canaway 1989)." |
