Abstract/Contents:"Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) turf, maintained at three different heights and evaluated both with and without verdure (top growth remaining after mowing) and bare soil was investigated for playing quality aspects by measuring impact absorption characteristics and traction on five dates over a 22 month period. Highest peak deceleration values measured with the 0.5 kg hammer were associated with those treatments without verdure and with bare soil. There were not treatment effects on peak deceleration measured with either the 2.25 kg of 4.5 kg hammer. Shorter impact time periods were also associated with those treatments without verdure and with bare soil. Significant differences measured on the impact time parameters without corresponding peak deceleration differences supported the importance of measuring more than one parameter. Soil moisture caused the greatest variation in impact absorption characteristics. Differences in impact characteristics between cutting heights were minimal."
