| Abstract/Contents: | "A questionnaire survey and a series of field visits were conducted to gather information on various aspects of synthetic turf "kickabout" areas. The questionnaire survey revealed that the general level of operator satisfaction with these surfaces was high, but that there were also problems experienced with these surfaces, the most notable being seam failure. Soccer was the dominant sport played on the areas with 96% of the kickabout areas being used for this sport. The use made of these surfaces by different groups was divided almost equally among schools, sports clubs and the general public. The series of site visits showed that the quality of the areas was variable. Three sites in particular were considered by the surveyors to be potentially unsafe because of extensive seam failures. After seam failure, vandalism was found to be the most serious problem." |
