Abstract/Contents: | Provides a detailed description of converting the soccer fields that would be used for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Tournament from warm season to cool season turfgrass, emphasizing that "80+ [more than 80] pitches...[had to] meet exacting FIFA standards for the winter World Cup competition." States that many of the fields that were established kikuyu or bermudagrass had to be converted to ryegrass for optimal winter play. Stresses the importance of timing the conversion correctly, reporting that "the timing for many of the transition renovations carried out was earlier in the South African summer (our winter) than the preferable early autumn time, when temperatures would drop to safer working levels...Transition timing for many sites was not as 'ideal' as we would have liked." Discusses the varying conditions of the pitch surfaces, reviewing the decision-making process used for surface renovations. Details the three renovation options for each field, explaining that while some fields completely removed the warm season grasses, others only had enough time for a partial conversion. Concludes that "each site...required its own specific management programme [program] in order for it to meet FIFA standards. This was only achieved with the successful negotiation of many variables that affected the critical path for each individual site." |
