Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the potential of golf course architectural trends to improve courses, focusing on tree management, the improvement of forward tees, minimalism with regard to bunkers, and naturalizing previously maintained portions of golf courses. Suggests that "Pete Dye has likely instigated more trends than any other golf course designer during the post-World War II era. But island greens, railroad ties, and nearly 8,000 total yards are unlikely to provide most golf facilities with advantage these days." Emphasizes that there might be "a number of so-called trends in the industry today which can assist with improving turf condition and creating a more enjoyable, attractive course, with economic and environmental benefits as well." Provides perspective on changing bunker design tactics from the 1920s to the 2000s, noting that in the 1920s "building an artificial sand bunker was comparatively simple: Shape an attractive hole in the ground; grass it; then filled [fill] the hole with sand likely excavated from a nearby pit." Explains that "a menacing appearance, which sincerely played into design strategy, was more important than the bunker's eventual condition." |
