Abstract/Contents:Evaluated "the effect of cultural practices on an established turfgrass stand consisting of approximately 80% perennial ryegrass and 20% Kentucky blue-grass." Cultural variables included mowing frequency, nitrogen fertility treatments, and irrigation frequency/regime. Nitrogen was applied at 2 lbs/ or 4 lbs/1000 square feet per year in four equal 0.5 lb. or 1.0 lb. increments at eight week intervals. Mowing frequency was either weekly or biweekly. The turf stands were either irrigated or not irrigated. "Irrigation resulted in the highest turfgrass quality throughout the growing season under the 4 lb. nitrogen rate. Under the 2 lb. nitrogen rate, irrigation resulted in a much higher population of weeds...The higher nitrogen fertility level (4 lbs./1000 square feet) produced superior turfgrass quality compared to the lower nitrogen level (2 lbs./1000 square feet)...Mowing only once every two weeks usually resulted in lower turfgrass quality than weekly mowing... Greatest weed encroachment occurred in the low fertility regime that was irrigated and mowed only once every two weeks."
