Abstract/Contents: | Examines "health and environmental concerns about pesticides registered for use on golf courses in the United States and identifies successful, alternative, less-hazardous turf management methods used on several organic courses." Notes that there are 68 pesticide products EPA-registered for use on golf courses, many of which are banned from use in the home and lawn turf market because they are considered too highly toxic. Discusses chemical pesticide use on golf courses and its potentially detrimental effects to human health, suggesting that "pesticides can represent a significant risk to public health through association with cancer, nervous disorders, developmental problems, hormonal disorders, and other chronic illnesses." Includes information on the potential health threats to the public, golf course maintenance workers, and native wildlife from exposure to carcinogenic chemicals found in common fungicides, as well as their contamination of soil and groundwater. Concludes that "a commonsense approach to healthy golf course management should be based on non-chemical management practices." |
