Abstract/Contents:"Fungicide treatments were evaluated for their effectiveness in controlling dollar Spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) on creeping bentgrass at Agricultural Operations at UC Riverside. The native soil, 'push-up' green was established in 2006 from sod and was a mix of several different bentgrasses, including Penncross and A1. Turf was irrigated at 100% ETo and mowed three times per week at 0.25-in. Plots received 0.5 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft monthly from Oct to Apr, but none during the study. Plots were inoculated mid-May with S. homoeocarpa grown on sterilized oats in the laboratory at the rate of 4 lb/1,000 sq ft. Fungicide applications were initiated on 8 Jun and applied at 14-day intervals until 6 Jul (3 applications total). Fungicide treatments were applied to four replicated 3 x 5 ft plots per treatment in a randomized complete block design with a CO2-powered backpack sprayer, using TeeJet 8002 flat fan nozzles to deliver the equivalent of 2 gal dilute fungicide spray per 1,000 sq ft at 35 psi. Disease severity (% plot area showing dollar spot symptoms) was evaluated until 20 Jul and data was analyzed by ANOVA followed by means separation using Fisher's LSD (α=0.05) Disease pressure was good with disease reaching 52% by 20 Jul in untreated plots. Most fungicides gave an immediate response 14 days after the first application (22 Jun); by 6 Jul, almost all fungicide treatments were significantly different from the check plots. The first application of Torque did not appear to give curative control of the disease in the trial. A subsequent application of Spectro provided significant control 14-days after application, and the third application (Torque alone) provided near complete control of the disease 14-days later. The results with Torque were not entirely surprising, as DMI fungicides have been weaker as curative applications in past trials conducted at UCR. The effect of Tourney as a curative application reflects a similar trend to that of Torque. Velista applications provided significant curative control of dollar spot in the trials. The 0.5 oz rate provided a slightly higher amount of control compared to the lower rate 14-days after application, and provided complete control of the disease after the third application. Interface was effective in reducing dollar spot with complete control at all rates after the second application. No clear rate response was seen in this trial for the effect of the first curative application. Tartan and Iprodione Pro likewise gave good control after the first application and complete control by the second application. No phytotoxicity or obvious, consistent reduction in turf quality was observed relative to the other fungicide treatments."
