Abstract/Contents:"Surveys states the condition of lawn bowling in California in 1977. Reports on green construction, cost of construction, maintenance and labor, grass species used, popularity of facilities and maintenance problems. 25 of 31 facilities responded which represented 52 greens throughout California. 80% were municipal facilities, while the remainder were privately operated. In most cases the turf manager responded to the survey. Historical information concerning the number of greens from 1901 to 1977 is presented. The greatest improvement in construction has been the use of sands as the major component of the soil mix. Prior to 1937 most greens were constructed of native material. 10% responded that P. annua was major species present, 37% creeping bentgrass, 50% hybrid bermudagrass. Construction costs were not avaiable for older greens. Of the 13 responses, the average cost was $15,363 per green with the range $5,000 to $40,000. The wide range in cost is due to treatment around the green such as sidwalks and seating area. The average maintenance cost, including labor, of 21 responses was $8,743 if 2 or more green were maintained at the same facility the cost dropped to $7,643. On the average 1,638 man hours are involved in maintenance. 40% of the respondents relyed on volunteers for some aspect of maintenance. When costs were given for green maintenance only the average per green was $925, $560 per green went to replace over 1,800 sq. ft. of sod at a cost of $.30 per sq. ft. Maintenance problems are similar to other high use green on unique problem of bowling green is leveling. The number of bowlers per week ranged from 25 to 500 with the average being 113, 80% were seniors, 11% middle age, 1% young adults."
