Abstract/Contents:Presents comments by Dr. G. Hawles, Dr. J. R. Hall and Dr. J. R. Watson from the opening general session of the 1978 Turf and Landscape Institute. Speakers addressed the need for efficient use and conservation of enery and gave practical suggestions on how to conserve energy. Dr. Hawkes reviewed energy efficiency of synthetic and natural fertilizers and discussed how improper irrigation wastes energy due to excess irrigation and loss of fertility from reaching. Dr. Hall described how scarcity of energy reduces desirable income available to finance the green industry. He believes this will force development of new technology and better management practices, he concluded turf income could increase if Americans were aware of the importance of turf to the ecosystem. Dr. Watson spoke on how new renovations, such as modulating pressure control irrigation systems, the use of lightweght material in equipment construction, and the development of slow speed machines can reduce energy output and cost. He presents a five-point program used to run equipment. He concluded wasting water wastes enery and suggested seeking new sources of energy and designing equipment to use the new sources.
