Abstract/Contents:Suggests that the soil science industry should develop ways to "grow the profession and bolster its image." Explains that the lack of standardized licensing across states may potentially inhibit public recognition of soil science professionals, and adds that "licensure also protects soil science professionals because only those people who meet state standards for education, experience, and performance on exams are allowed to work as soil scientists in licensing states." Describes communications between employers and universities, indicating that it may contribute to undereducated soil science students. Advises educating the public on the importance of soils "in problems such as food insecurity, water quality, erosion, and climate change." Offers recommendations to improve the education and representation of soil sciences in society, such as incorporating the subject into school curriculums as early as kindergarten.
