Abstract/Contents:"Renovation of stoloniferous and rhizomatous turfgrasses by vertical mowing for thatch removal was studied, using various soil penetration depths and vertical mower blade spacings and directions. Vertical mowing with blades spaced at 5.1 or 7.6 cm (2 or 3 in) and a depth setting of 6.4 mm (.25 in) had minimal effect on ground cover and growth rate of centipede-grass [Eremochloa opiuroides (Munro.) Hack.]. Vertical mowing in one direction with blades spaced at 7.6 cm (3 in) and a depth setting of 6.4 mm ,0.25 in) had minimal effect on ground cover and growth rate of 'Argentine' bahiagrass [Paspalum notatum (Flugge.)]. Visual estimates of ground cover were not indicative of leaf area and should be used with caution to evaluate turf density."
