| Abstract/Contents: | Briefly summarizes research conducted at Rutgers University "to demonstrate that germinating conidia of Neotyphodium can colonize and infect endophyte-free seedlings of grass" by means of horizontal transmission. Discusses commonly held views on endophyte transmission, and introduces the concept of epiphyllous structures within Epichloë and Neotyphodium pathogens. Concludes that "the assumption that endophytes are 'trapped' within plant hosts is incorrect as endophytes may spread to uninfected grass hosts by conidia formed on the surfaces of plants." |
