| Abstract/Contents: | "Four turf-type bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. Pers.) selections were inoculated with a mixture of two strains of the N2-fixing bacteria, Azospirillum brasilense, to determine growth response to inoculation under field conditions. Inoculation increased top growth in a previous glasshouse study, but no inoculation response in ground cover, to growth, turf color, or acetylene reduction activity was noted in the field. Bermudagrass selections differed in rates of ground cover and top growth production. Unknown growth parameters may have negated differences among inoculation treatments. Low N2-fixation activity as measured by acetylene reduction was found in soil cores taken from 15-year old turfgrass plots. Additional experimentation is needed to document the benefit of inoculation with N2-fixing bacteria to turfgrass cultural systems." |
