Abstract/Contents: | Studied how frequently lawns need to be fertilized and what fertilizers are recommended. Tests began in 1988 with 15 fertilizers at 4lb N/1000ft2, reduced to 3lb N/1000ft2 in 1989. Used 2, 3, or 4 applications to fescue-dominated rough area of the Yahara Hills Golf Course. Average of color ratings made between April 26 and October 31, 1989 are presented in a table for each fertilizer-application combination. Frequency of fertilizer application required to maintain good color was dependent on the fertilizer applied. For example, Greenskeeper SCU gave excellent color intensity and duration at all 3 frequencies while Scotts 34-3-7 performance was greatly enhanced in going from 2 to 3 applications per season. There were few instances where the shift from 3 to 4 applications markedly improved color intensity or duration. Fertilizers that provided satisfactory turfgrass color for 75% of the season were: Greenskeeper (2,3,4 applications), Scotts 32-3-10 (2 and 4), Scotts 34-3-7 (3 and 4), Tee time 9-6-18 (3), Par ex 21-2-20 (3 and 4), Brayton 30-4-8 (4), and Sustane 5-2-4 (4). |
