Abstract/Contents:Demonstration of 14 fertilizers on a poorly drained tee populated by creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass. Fertilizers were chosen to provide an array of N sources and formulations and are not necessarily intended for golf green or tee application. Rate and frequency of fertilizer application generally fell within manufacturer guidelines. Monthly (June to October) and season average color ratings are provided in a table. Ratings suggest "1. Nitrazine and Agriform 34-0-7 are effective as single, full-season N applications. However, the single application of Nitrazine at the 4 lb. rate did cause some turfgrass burn. 2. Nitroform, because of its relatively low activity index, typically does not perform well when applied at the same N rate as other fertilizers. At the manufacturer's recommended rate of 6 lb. N, satisfactory turfgrass color can be achieved but tends to fade in late season. 3. Of the two SCU products tested, Lebanon's Greenskeeper (32-0-0) has some advantage over Johnson's SCU (37-0-0). But don't look for Greenskeeper 32-0-0 in the market place. It has been replaced by 37-0-0 supplied by the same manufacturer as the Johnson's SCU. Besides the change in analysis, the 37-0-0 has larger granule size and will be subject to mower nicking and pickup if applied on golf greens and tees. 4. Par Ex 31-0-0 fine performs very well, particularly in late season. 5. Color development with the three high K fertilizers was very similar. 6. The two natural organic products, fine Milorganite and Sustane, are capable of providing comparable, good levels of turfgrass color on a reasonably sustained basis. 7. The four complete fertilizers (Sustane 5-2-4), Sta-Green 17-2-10, Johnsons 18-3-12 and Scotts 32-3-10) can provide excellent turfgrass color throughout the growing season. All 14 fertilizers tested on the tee area provided satisfactory and similar levels of turfgrass color. This was true even for single applications of Nitrazine and Agriform 34-0-7."
