Abstract/Contents:Presents research conducted at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to "(i) evaluate perennial ryegrass wear tolerance and recovery in response to N [nitrogen] and K [potassium] and (ii) identify plant mechanisms associated with maximum wear tolerance in this species." Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "wear is applied as a strip within replicates using a differential slip-wear device...The wear simulator is designed to create a scuffing action while minimizing pressure to the soil, limiting soil compaction." Reports that "greater wear injury with either K or N was associated with greater leaf growth rates." Concludes that "turf managers can maximize wear tolerance by not exceeding 5 lb 1000ft-2 yr-1 [five pounds per 1000 square feet per year]."
