Abstract/Contents:Determined the effect of season of application of Prograss (Ethofumesate), alone or in combination with Bensulide, on the population of Poa annua in a Penncross creeping bentgrass practice green. The soil on the site is a Coland clay loam (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Cumulic Haploquoll) with a pH of 7.7, 19 ppm phosphorus (P), 116 ppm potassium (K), and 5.3% organic matter. The area receives approximately 4lb nitrogen (N)/1000 ft2/yr. The Poa annua population ranged from 30 to 60% of the green's surface in the fall of 1987. Plots were 5 feet by 5 feet. The study was replicated three times. Treatments were applied in 3 gal. water/1000 sq. ft. and included control (no herbicides), Prograss or Prograss plus Bensulide (8.00/bia/A). All herbicide plots received monthly (September to November) application of Prograss in fall of 1987. In spring of 1988, plots then received either Bensulide in April or Prograss in either April, May or June. Plant counts were made in June and September 1988, and soil temperatures were monitored at the 2 inch depth once per month from September to November 1987 and April to June 1988. Soil temperature decreased from 59 to 45F from September to November and increased fron 52 to 73F from April to June There was severe winter kill of Poa annua on the entire green during the winter of 1987-88. By June 1988, much of the Poa annua had germinated and populations on much of the green ranged from 15 to 30% of the greens surface. Counts were taken on 6 in by 6 in grids divided into 2 in by 2 in squares that were randomly tossed on three areas of each plot in June and September of 1988. The control plots contained an average of 25 P. annua population was observed in plots that received no follow-up spring Prograss application and plots that received Prograss follow-up in April and May. No P. annua was found in plots treated with a follow-up application of Prograss in June or in plots treated in the spring with Besulide. Observation of P. annua recovery in the spring of 1988 indicated that much of the spring germination took place after the May Prograss treatment and before the June treatment. Complete control with Prograss was established on plots treated after all P. annua had germinated, or on plots treated with the preemergence herbicide Bensulide. No phytotoxicity was observed on any of the plots at any time during the study.
