Abstract/Contents:Study to ascertain whether certain diseases, particularly Helminthosporium and Red thread, contribute to reduced red fescue turf quality and whether certain fungicides or fertilizer-fungicide combinations may be useful in improving red fescue turf quality. Treatment plots were in a nonfertilized, non-irrigated red fescue in a rough at Yahara Hills Golf Course. A randomized complete block design was established for the fungicide treatments with four replications, each 5 x 10 ft in size. One-half of each plot was then fertilized with Scott's LawnPro Fertilizer (37-3-3) at the rate of 0.9 lb N/1000ft2. Fungicides were applied 8/1 and 8/16/89. Fungicide treatments included experiments and were: 1) SDS 6608F at 5 or 7.5 fl oz/1000ft2 (m), 2) Daconil 2787 at 6 fl oz/m, 3) Chipco 26019F at 4 fl oz/m alone or in combination with Tersan 1991 50DF at 1 oz/m, 4) ProStar 50W at 2 oz/m, and 5) ICI AO523 at 80g/m + Ortho X-77 at 3.8 ml/m. Quality and disease ratings were made on 9/8/89. Fertilizer application dramatically improved turf quality but not to acceptable levels. There were no statistical differences among fungicide treatments in nonfertilized plots and quality was lacking. Fungicide effect without regard to fertilizer influence on Red thread was demonstrable although a stronger incidence or disease was needed to distinguish with confidence. Disease incidence of Dollar spot and Helminthosporium was too low to measure.
