Abstract/Contents: | Discusses how the severe winter of 1989 could lead to dead and injured turf, i.e., winterkill, in the spring of 1990. Defines winterkill as low-temperature kill which occurs below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Describes the physiological response of plants to these low temperatures, and lists factors which contribute to winterkill. Gives methods of preventive control for three specific areas: the transition zone and the northern half of the warm humid/semiarid climatic region, northern cool climates lacking snow cover, and northern cool climates having deep snow accumulation. Provides in a table low-temperature tolerance of several warm and cool season turfgrasses. Also gives two diagnostic methods (potting turf plugs and examination of the crown area of individual plants) for assessing the extent of winterkill before spring greenup. |
