| Abstract/Contents: | In a small-scale trial, 0, 1000, and 2000 g/m2 CaO was mixed to a depth of 10 cm into four soil types (chalk, sandy, loan and silt), and in a field trial 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 g/m2 CaO was added to a sandy loam soil. After moderate compaction the field was sown with a Lolium perenne/Poa annua sports-turf mixture, then compressed with a roller at a pressure of 15 kg/cm2 twice a week for 8 weeks. Over a 2-year monitoring period the stability of the soil aggregates was improved, the total pore space and number of coarse pores (more than 10 um) were increased, and the compaction of the soil under pressure was reduced in the CaO-treated soils compared with controls. As the rate of CaO applied increased, the incidence of wilting decreased and the rate of new root formation was higher. There was little difference in sward density and growth between controls and treated plots. |
