Abstract/Contents:"The performance of MON 15151 1EC for pre- and postemergence control of crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl., D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop. and D. ciliaris (Retz.) Koel.] was evaluated in 1989 under a United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved Experimental Use Permit (EUP). MON 15100 is 3,5-Pyridinedicarbothioic acid, 2-(difluromethyl) -4- (2-methylpropyl)-6-(trifluromethyl)-S, S-dimethyl ester; the common name is dithiopyr. The proposed trade name for turf uses is Dimension tm herbicide. Trials were established, under commercial use conditions, throughout the United States on both warm and cool-season turfgrasses. Total EPA-approved EUP allocations for the United States were 4000 quarts (3785 L) of product and 1333 acres (540 ha) treated. MON 15151 1EC was distributed to selected golf courses, lawn care companies, landscape companies and municipal and industrial organizations within approved states and was applied through commercial equipment Performance was evaluated on sites up to one half hectare in size. MON 15151 provided excellent season-long preemergence control of crabgrass. Rates required for season-long control with a single spring application were 0.43 to 0.56 kg ha-1 for the Northeast, Midwest and CA and 0.56 to 0.84 kg ha-1 for the South and Southeast. Rates of MON 15151 required to provide postemergence of crabgrass in the 1 to 3 leaf stage are 0.28 to 0.43 kg ha-1 in CA, 0.43 to 0.56 kg ha-1 in the Northeast and Midwest and 0.56 to 0.84 kg ha-1 in the South and Southeast. Control of plants with 1 to 3 tillers was improved with the addition of MSMA. Effective rates are 0.28 kg ha-1 MON 15151 plus 0.56 to 1.12 kg ha-1 MSMA for the Northeast, Midwest and CA, and 0.56 ha-1 MON 15151 plus 1.12 to 2.24 kg ha-1 MSMA for the South and Southeast. Excellent turf safety was demonstrated on both cool-season and warm-season turfgrasses. Cool-season turfgrasses demonstrating tolerance to MON 15151 include bentgrass (Agrostis) spp. L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Warm-season turfgrasses demonstrating tolerance include bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.], St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secudatum (Walt.) Kuntze.] and Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.). MON 15151 also provides preemergence control or suppression of a number of other annual grass and broadleaf weeds [as referred to in Table 2: annual bluegrass, crabgrass, foxtail, goosegrass, chickweed, spurge, lespedeza, oxalis, purslane]. The EPA has granted an EUP extension for MON 15151 1EC and MON 15101 1EC, an alternate formulation, for expanded evaluation in 1990. Total allocations approved under the extension are 6320 quarts (5981 L) of product and 3960 acres (1603 ha) treated."
