Abstract/Contents: | "The lack of herbicides available to control goosegrass (Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.) on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris HUDS.) putting green turf poses a unique problem for turfgrass managers. Preemergent herbicides for use on putting greens, as well as postemergent compounds, produce significant injury accepted by turf managers due to lack of non-phytotoxic alternative. Our objectives for this study were to evaluate experimental and commercially available herbicides at various rates, application intervals, and formulations for safety on five varieties of creeping bentgrass (Emerald, Prominent, Seaside, Peeneagle, and Penncross) maintained as putting green turf. Preemergent applications included dithiopyr as a 0.25G (MON 15175) and a 1EC (MON 15104) at 014, 0.28, and 0.56 kg ai/ha, quinchlorac 50WP at 0.56, 0.84, and 1.12 kg ai/ha, oxadiazon 2G at 0.84, 1.68, and 2.52 kg ai/ha, and the commercial formulation of oxadiazon + bensulide a 6.56G (supplying 1.68 kg ai/ha oxadiason and 6.72 kg ai/ha of bensulide). Generally, injury from preemergent applications was most evident 30 days after application at all rates on all varieties. Varietal differences were most evident with regard to ability to recover from injury, Penneagle and Emerald being the least able. At 30 days after treatment, except for quinchlorac which produced objectionable injury 12 days after application at all rates on all varieties. Varietal differences were most evident with regard to ability to recover from injury, Penneagle and Emerald being the least able. At 30 days after treatment dithiopyr produced slight reddening of leaf sheaths; however, injury was not considered to be objectionable. Oxadiazon at 2.52 kg ai/ha injured all varieties; 0.86 kg ai/ha injured none. The 1.62 kg ai/ha rate of oxadiazn alone caused objectionable injury, but the same rate of the commercial combination of oxadiazon + bensulide did not. Postemergent applications were made at 14 day intervals and included MSMA at 0.56, 1.12, and 2.24 kg ai/ha rate of MSMA applied with the safener did not produce injry and the safener significantly reduced MSMA phytotoxicity at all rates on all varieties. Fenoxaprop at 0.04 kg ai/ha applied at high volume did not cause phytotoxicity; however, 0.09 kg ai/ha and lower volume applications at 0.04 kg ai/ha did cause injury considered to be objectionable. This study suggests that there are viable strategies for control of goosegrass in creeping bentgrass putting green turf that include dithipyr, oxadiazon + bensulide premix combination, applied preemergent and fenoxaprop at 0.04 kg ai/ha at 997 l/ha, or MSMA at 1.12 kg ai/ha with a safener for postemergent control." |
