Abstract/Contents: | "Public concern over exposure to pesticides following commercial lawncare applications to residential lawn turfs prompted this study to assess levels of pesticides dislodged from treated lawn areas. In this study commercial formulations of two herbicides and three insecticides used in lawncare were applied using equipment and procedures employed in the industry by commercial lawncare operators. Field research studies were conducted to determine the influence of posttreatment irrigation (0 vs 7 DAT) on dislodgeable residues of DCPA 75W, pendimethalin 60 DG, chlorpyrifos 4EC, diazinon 4EC, and isophenfos 2F following applications at labeled use rates to a Kentucky bluegrass turf maintained at 7.6 cm, irrigated, and fertilized to supply 195 kg N ha-1 annually. Pesticides were applied individually as a tank mixture with fertilizers (22 g N kg-1) at 1627 L ha-1 spray volume using a ChemLawn(r) 4GPM spray gun calibrated at 63 ml s-1 flow rate. Turfgrass clippings were harvested 0, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 14 DAT using a rotary mower set at 5 cm. Clippings were analyzed for detergent-stripped (dislodgeable) pesticide residue. Total residue concentration was also determined 1 HAT. Irrigation (1.3 cm) was applied to two of four replicated pesticide plots 2 HAT, afterwhich water was withheld from all plots until after the 7 DAT harvest. All plots were then mowed and irrigated. Total pesticide residue retained on clippings harvested 1 HAT average 21.3 +- 8.3% of the applied rate. Irrigation 2 HAT reduced concentrations of F-, DG-, and WP-formulated pesticides 45%, but had no significant affect on reducing concentration of EC-formulated insecticide residues retained on foliage. Dislodeable residues as measured by detergent stipping foliage, average 5.6% of the applied rate 0 DAT, and dissipated exponentially over time to 3.3% IDAT, 2.7% 2 DAT, 1.9% 3 DAT, 1% 7DAT, and to 0.3% by 14 DAT. Dissipation rates varied among pesticide treatments but not between irrigation treatments. Mean dislodgeable foliar residues of pesticides retained on foliage 3 DAT for irrigated versus non-irrigated were: for pendimethalin at 2.2 kg ha-1 levels were 0.04 vs 0.12 ug cm-2 (p = .02); for DCPA at 11.2 kg ha-1 levels were 0.80 vs 2.02 ug cm-2 (p = .06); for chlorpyrifos at 1.1 kg ha-1 levels were 0.02 vs 0.01 ug cm-2 (p = .13); for diazinon at 6.2 kg ha-1 levels were 0.52 vs 0.50 ug cm-2 (ns); and for isophenfos applied at 2.2 kg ha-1, dislodgeable residue levels were 0.19 vs 0.29 ug cm-2 (p - 0.03) leaf tissue. These results suggest that a very low percentage of lawn-applied pesticides are dislodgeable, and that these levels decrease rapidly with time. Secondly, irrigation can further reduce levels depending upon formulation of pesticide applied." |
