| Abstract/Contents: | "Plots were established in a commercial bluegrass seed field in Lewis County, Idaho to compare repeated applications of Tilt for Puccinia spp. control. Treatments were applied to 6 ft by 20 ft plots in 25 gal of water per acre using a CO2 backpack sprayer equipped with hollow cone nozzles. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design and replicated four times. Tilt was applied one, two, three times beginning on 8 May at Feekes growth stage 9 (flag leaf ligule just emerged). The second application was made at Feekes stage 10 on 16 May, and the third on 22 May at Feekes stage 10.2-10.3 (1/4 to 1/2 inflorescence emerged). Treatments were applied at F( (Feekes 9), F9 and F10, or F9 and F10 and F10.3. A control plot was sprayed with water at all three timings. Visual ratings of rust infestation were made 6 July by examining eight randomly chosen culms in each plot. Condition of the flag leaf and penultimate leaf were recorded on a 0 to 8 scale. A 10.8 sq ft sample was cut from a representative area of each plot on 10 July. Samples were bagged, air dried for 10 days, and thrashed, and uncleaned seed was weighed. Only the plots receiving three Tilt applications significantly decreased leaf diease scores on either of the leaves evaluated. Further testing would be needed to determine if three applications are necessary to suppress leaf rust, or if later timing of single or double applications is more critical. Though untreated plots appeared to have the most leaf rust (highest average leaf disease scores), they also produced a significantly higher average yield." |
