Abstract/Contents:Three types of grass pitch in use at Basle were evaluated for turf quality and wear. With equal amounts of use, the Intergreen pitch (2) showed the greatest amount of wear. Constant shade in winter on the standard pitch (1) was detrimental. The greatest invasion of Poa annua (mid-field) and P. trivialis (sides) was in the Cellsystem pitch (3) and least in (2); Lolium perenne was dominant on (2) and P. pratensis on (1). The initially similar thatch on the 3 pitches, increased in thickness and weight in (3) where its breakdown was particularly slow; breakdown was fastest on (2). The root mass declined on all pitches but particularly on (3). The results obtained are discussed in terms of construction costs and technival improvements. The higher costs of the Cellsystem were not balanced by corresponding advantages.
