| Abstract/Contents: | In field trials in May 1981 with different root zone mixtures, one contained double the normal amount of a sandy soil and another 3 times the normal amount of a loam soil. CaO was added to the root zone mixture at 5 or 10 g/1 soil. Lime treatments delayed sward development at the start of the trial because they led to high pH values (up to 12.3), accelerated drying out and hydrophobic soil characteristics. Once artificial wear had begun, improved sward density was evident in the root zone to which loam had been added. Lime-amended turf showed stronger root development and more growth, lower humus content indicated increased mineralization, because of more biological activity, and therefore increased nutrient supply. The infiltration rate was improved by liming, but effects on bulk density and the proportion of coarse pores were only slightly positive. |
