Abstract/Contents:A mixture of 30% slightly decomposed peat, 30% sand and 40% silty fine sand, 15 cm thick, on a bed of sand 20 cm thick, was used for comparing the incorporation of fertilizers into a root zone (30 g/m2 N) with three successive surface dressings each at 10 g/m2 N. The first surface dressing was made at sowing of the Lolium perenne/Poa pratensis mixture and the others at intervals of about six weeks. The fertilizers on which the treatments were based were Nitrophoska permanent (15:9:15), Osmocote (16:10:13) and Biosol (6:1.5:3.5 with added PK). Twenty g/m2 N was sufficient for the creation of a thick sward; fast-acting N forms gave quicker sward formation. With Nitrophoska permanent there was an initial burst of growth followed by a decline; with Osmocote a slow start and increasing growth later; and with Biosol the least amount of growth, spread well over the season. Fertilizer application in three 10 g/m2 N doses gave a better use of N and better residual effects, as shown by little or no damage from Corticium fuciforme. Split fertilizer applications, however, increased thatch formation, and also seemed to impair rooting.
