Abstract/Contents:Ten proprietary fertilizers, either mineral-based or organic based, were compared on fairway turf (5 species mixture) in four different treatment regimes. Compared with the amount of cover at the start of the trial Lolium perenne and Phleum pratense showed no change. Cynosurus cristatus showed a great increase, partly attributable to locality, and Poa pratensis increased slightly. Festuca rubra declined, except at the commercially recommended rates. Differences according to type and amount of fertilizer were evident and in the invasion by alien meadow-grasses. In general, no difference between organic and mineral fertilizers was apparent. Although at the beginning of the trial there was a heavy weed infestation, it was quickly reduced even by the fertilizers without herbicide. Growth in spring was closely related to the available nitrogen, but very rapid availability in spring (particularly of the mineral fertilizers) produced weaker growth in the autumn. There were few color differences in spring, but the organic fertilizers produced the best appearance in autumn. Disease incidence was, on average, less with mineral than with organic fertilizers, but there were differences within each group. Simple mineral fertilizers at medium nitrogen rates (80 kg/ha) produced acceptable turf.
