Abstract/Contents:"The increased flooding in valleys during long rainstorms and the serious damage to soil in eroded areas make it necessary to establish green cover in these areas." Totally inappropriate swards are often used because seed species appropriate for above the tree line are difficult to obtain. "For this reason it is necessary to create an ecologically suitable vegetation cover. There are two ways in which this might be done. First, by adding seed of local species to the commercial seeds mixture or even by making a pure sowing of such local seed. Second, by vegetative propagation, in nurseries, of alpine plants taken from around the eroded areas and then planted into them. At the moment there is neither enough suitable seed available to achieve green cover quickly and effectively over large areas. Therefore, raising plants in pots and putting them into the gaps in a sown area of vegetation is one way of further achieving suitable permanent plant communities..." Table two shows grasses that have proven so far to be resistant to high altitudes without fertilization, including such species as Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis, Festuca duriuscula and Festuca pratensis. Poa alpina, a slow growing, non-competitive grass, shows significant growth only in the second year of its planting, and blooms only in its third.
