| Abstract/Contents: | "After a discussion of the different functions of plants in animal life, and of the effects of mowing on ecological meadows, results are presented from investigations of the arthropod fauna (insects and spiders) found after sowing species-rich mixtures for wild flower meadows. In a comparison of mixtures, phytophagous insects (bugs, grasshoppers, weevils) were dominant, the weevils especially in those plots with a high proportion of white clover. Another investigation with different numbers of cuts per year demonstrated that more frequent cutting reduced the numbers of insects and spiders. Only clover weevils increased in numbers, as white clover was favoured by repeated mowing. This treatment had very adverse effects on entomophagous predators and parasitoids. In general, it was evident that the mixtures in question could--under the conditions of one or two cuts per year--support a species-rich fauna, thus forming important components of the different ecosystems to which they belong." The relationship between plant and animal (insect) is discussed in some detail, outlinind both the biological and abiological factors that can determine the bio-diversity of any given site, as has been expounded by Thienemann. |
