| Abstract/Contents: | "In the controlled conditions of the "Herhof System" composting reactors, micro-organisms convert organic waste into usable compost in 7-10 days. The average reduction in mass during this period is 35% by weight. The completely closed system with its waste air purification by heat exchangers and compost filters reliably avoids any impairment of the environment by odours. There is no seepage of water out of the composting reactor: water is simply re-sprinkled within the box. The temperature is continuously maintained above 60 ^DGC for several days during composting, and this provides safe disinfection of the material, killing pathogens and weed seeds at the same time. After the composting process, the compost is shredded and sieved. The material which is not disposed of at once is stored in stock piles and does not need any further turning or aeration." |
