Abstract/Contents:"An open-air trial in containers was made to examine the creation of plant cover on roofs by the use of ready-made vegetation mats, which were compared with grass seeding and the planting of fragments of Sedum. The aspects studied were the rooting into and through the substrate, the ability to remain in place, and the reduction of initial maintenance. The trial, from July to October 1987, was made in three parts, each concerned with different questions. A "fleece" layer laminated to the underside of the vegetation mat by a heat process was found to have no effect on vegetative growth, or on rooting through the mat and the "fleece" and down into the substrate. Roots started to grow down into the substrate a few days after the mats were laid, and after only three weeks they had acheived a fully effective grip on the whole 12 cm thickness of the construction. With favourable weather, initial maintenance to the point of achieving satisfactory plant cover takes three weeks, in less favourable conditions four or five weeks. As regards satisfactory green appearance, this is achieved as soon as the vegetation mat is laid."
